IAYO Seeks Members for Sustainability Research
IAYO seeks two members to take part in research on the social impact and environmental costs of participating in youth orchestras.
As part of the implementation of our Climate and Environmental Action Policy, IAYO has received funding to commission research on the social benefits and the environmental costs of participation in youth orchestras.
This is a pioneering research project that will pilot measure the costs and benefits of our activities and will form the basis of advocacy for the positive social impacts of participative arts for young people (and older young people too) as part of our national commitment to greater sustainability.
Our belief is that actively participating in the arts gives a high level of social value for a very small amount of resources. We aim to test this in relation to youth orchestras in co-operation with Native Events, a leading organisation in sustainable festivals and environmental research in the arts.
This two-year project, will also help both IAYO and our member orchestras have clear decision-making criteria for implementing sustainable in our programmes.
We would like to see young orchestral musicians taking part in delivering the research. These young people can be supported by IAYO’s Youth Participation Officers.
What’s Involved:
The research will be led by experienced staff at Native Events who will facilitate the collection of information by the creation of web-based forms for submission and site-visits to show how to collect the relevant information.
Over the course of the first year, we will need consistent collection of information from the participating orchestras in relation to:
Energy: Information on the buildings that you use for rehearsals and concerts including electricity, oil, gas and renewables. In practicality, this will involve finding out the Kilowatt Hours used in the buildings.
Waste: Information on the waste produced in venues including information on waste segregation. Depending on the waste companies used, this information is available in the building’s online accounts for waste collection.
Travel: Travel information for participants, staff and audiences to and from rehearsals and concerts.
If you are interested in contributing to this research and would like further information, please contact Allin Gray at IAYO at allin@iayo.ie or on +353879601037.
