Galway Music Residency | Apprentice Ensemble Programme 2021

Galway Music Residency has reimagined its long-standing Apprentice Ensemble programme to focus on remote learning and will trial a one-semester pilot programme this spring.

They are delighted to be working closely with local music schools in Galway City and County to select candidates for this pilot. In future, participants will be selected from an open call. Candidates will be welcome to apply as individuals rather than as part of established ensembles. The programme will feature two levels of apprentice, junior and senior, with an age range of 13 – 23.

ConTempo Quartet will choose repertoire, provide prepared parts, as well as “how to play videos”, identifying the key passages of difficulty for each part. Participants will work with their own teachers to prepare their parts to workshop standard. Concurrently, the apprentice ensembles will attend monthly age-appropriate Zoom “chat sessions” with ConTempo Quartet members and a facilitator, which will address some of the key elements of ensemble performance. They will also be asked to engage in reflective thinking, considering the themes of the sessions in the context of their previous ensemble playing. In addition, the participants will be invited to take part in remote social sessions to get to know their peers and mentors ahead of meeting in person.

Covid-19 restrictions permitting, the remote learning will culminate in a “play weekend” when the participants will be allocated to ensembles to work together in person. The weekend will consist of ice-breakers, workshop sessions with ConTempo Quartet as well as sessions led by the participants based on the learning they have had through the remote elements of the programme.

It will conclude with an informal performance for family and friends or pre-recorded performances to be made available online. All plans will incorporate Covid-19 health and safety controls and a Covid-19 Compliance Officer will be on site at all times. If the pilot is a success, Galway Music Residency hopes the programme will develop and expand, opening to candidates throughout Galway City and County and beyond.
