Contemporary Violin and Bow making in Ireland. An Exhibition.

CIT Cork School of Music plays host to an exhibition of Contemporary Violin and Bow making in Ireland on 25th – 26th May 2012.

This exhibition presents the work of some of the finest violin and bow makers working in Ireland today. The group first came together in 2007 for West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry and has continued to exhibit there since. The skill and knowledge of members of the group has been recognised in awards at the most prestigious international competitions.

The exhibition will put in perspective the quality of contemporary instruments and bows available to players, whether students, professional musicians players, or soloists with established international careers.

Players will have the opportunity to try instruments and bows in a relaxed environment and the event will include talks and discussions, a concert and a separate presentation of instruments made in Ireland in the past.

Proposed Schedule:

Friday 25th May

  • 11:30am to 9pm – Main Exhibition in Foyer
  • 1:10pm – Lunchtime concert by young siring quartets.
  • 5pm – Talks and discussions on bow making.
  • 6pm – Advanced student quartet and string trio concert in Curtis auditorium followed by open discussion with violin ond bow makers.

Saturday 26th May

  • 10am to 1:30pm – Main Exhibition in Foyer
  • 11am – Introductory talk on irish violin makers of the past.
  • 12pm – Talk on instrument maintenance by Bertrand Galen

An exhibition of work by Irish violin makers of the past will run concurrently with the main exhibition.
