Association of British Orchestras Conference 2019 – Belfast, 23 – 25 January

The Association of British Orchestras will hold their annual conference in Belfast from 23 – 25 January. This year’s theme is ‘Crossing Borders’.

Crossing borders; it’s what orchestras do. From touring to digital delivery, orchestras are global businesses. But borders are not just physical. As orchestral music’s relevance as an artform continues to be questioned, there are other boundaries that need to be crossed, both internal and external, to reach new and diverse audiences in new places, forge an inclusive workforce, and redefine what it means to be an orchestra in the 21st century.

IAYO Director, Allin Gray, will take part in a panel discussion on how the benefits of the restructuring of the RTÉ Orchestras will spread across the nation’s classical music scene on Thursday, 24 January at midday.

Key topics include Brexit, diversity and inclusion, new technology, and the relationship between managers and musicians. Keynote speakers include Sean Rainbird, Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, and writer and philosopher Sir Roger Scruton.

There will be concerts by the Ulster Orchestra, with additional musicians from orchestras across the UK and the Czech Philharmonic, and the Čhavorenge children’s choir.
