Mayo Youth Orchestra Tour of Lisbon

Mayo Youth Orchestra embarked on a challenging six day tour of Lisbon in July, which saw them perform three, hour-long concerts to delighted audiences who queued in the streets in 36̊ heat to obtain seats. The orchestra, led by their musical director Dr. Anne Moriarty, travelled to Lisbon as part of the International Lisbon Music Festival. They comprise of young musicians from all over the county from Killala and Ballina to Ballinrobe and Westport, but based in Castlebar. In Lisbon, they performed in the enchanting Palacio Foz and in  Palacio da Ajuda, (where they had to swap rooms to accommodate the victorious Portugal football team being received by the President!). In the historic and picturesque town of Batalha the orchestra performed in the beautiful Unfinished Chapel of the Monastery of Batalha, where the open, starry sky added to the magical atmosphere. The Mayo Youth Orchestra continues to go from strength to strength, having also recently collaborated with the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra from Maryland, USA in Castlebar at the end of June.
