Spike – Dublin Alternative Cello Festival 2020
Spike – Dublin Alternative Cello Festival was named ‘Gig of the week’ by The Irish Times in 2019. The 2020 programme promises to be as good. They are presenting ten unique events with some of the most talented and exciting cello artists & friends from home and abroad. Running from Friday 7 February until Sunday 9 February 2020, in venues across Dublin, it’s a wonderful opportunity to hear the diversity of this sublime instrument! On Saturday 8 February, they celebrate a day of cello-based musical activity for children.
The Curious Cello – A fun new music installation by composer Jonathan Nangle.
Commissioned by The Ark in association with Spike Cello Festival.
Discover an unusual cello you can play without having taken any lessons! Jonathan has taken the body of an old, broken cello and brought it back to life – but it’s not quite the same as a normal cello anymore! It now has special paint on the outside that not only looks cool but also conducts electricity. This means you will be able to make this cello play lots of new and unexpected sounds using just your hands.
Tickets: Free Entry.
Dates & Times: Sat 8 Feb @ 11am-3.30pm (Last entry 3pm).
Age Range & Duration: For Ages 4+. This is a short drop in experience (approx 5-10 mins).
Flow with the Spike – Music & Movement Workshops.
Young movers and shakers will love the gentle creative workshop led by Kitty Maguire, accompanied by beautiful cello music played by Anna Marcossi.
You will be guided in moving and exploring with your body while the sounds of live cello music help you to relax and move easily. Starting with breathing exercises using bubbles, then coming up with shapes and moves to go with a well-known story. There’ll also be other fun games such as musical yoga statues!
All along the way, Anna will play her magical cello to help you. Teddy bears or favourite blankets are welcome to go along to this workshop too!
